Why Spring Shedding Demands More Filter Maintenance
If you share your home with a cat, you know spring is peak shedding season. Longer days and warmer weather trigger a natural coat change, and suddenly you’re finding fur on every surface.
Your air purifier is working overtime to capture those floating hairs. But that also means its filters fill up faster—especially the pre-filter, which catches larger particles before they reach the HEPA layer.
Here’s what a pre-filter looks like after just two weeks in a multi-cat home during spring.

Neglecting filter maintenance during shedding season can lead to:
-
Reduced airflow
-
Louder operation
-
Higher energy use
-
Shortened HEPA filter life
The good news is that a few extra minutes of cleaning can keep everything running smoothly.
How Often Should You Clean?
| Filter Type | Normal Maintenance | During Shedding Season |
|---|---|---|
|
Pre-filter (electrostatic sheet, replace) |
Every 2–4 weeks | Weekly (or more if you have multiple cats) |
| HEPA filter | Every 4–6 months (replace) | Same schedule, but check monthly for premature clogging |
If you have a long-haired cat or more than two cats, you may need to clean the pre-filter twice a week during peak shedding.
How to Replace Your W-Cat Pre-Filter Sheet
The W-Cat uses a cylindrical composite filter (HEPA + carbon) wrapped on the outside by an electrostatic cotton sheet that captures hair, dander, and dust by static charge. For routine maintenance you replace the cotton wrap; the composite cylinder lasts up to 3,000 hours (about 4 months of continuous use).
Before you start: grab a fresh electrostatic cotton sheet. If you’re also replacing the composite filter, have a new cylindrical filter ready too. Make sure your hands are dry.
Step 0. Power off and unplug the unit. Press the power button, then disconnect the plug so the unit is fully de-energized.
Step 1. Open the filter compartment – press the PUSH grooves on both sides of the unit at the same time and lift the upper section straight up until the compartment is fully open.
Step 2. Lift out the filter assembly – take out the entire cylindrical composite filter (with the electrostatic cotton wrap on the outside) and set it on a clean surface.
Step 3. Replace the cotton wrap – this is the routine 2–4 week step:
- Peel the old electrostatic cotton sheet off the outside of the composite cylinder (do this near a trash can, since loose hair will come off with it).
- Check the cylinder: if it still looks clean and hasn’t reached 3,000 hours, keep it. If it’s dirty or at end of life, swap in a new cylinder too.
- Wrap a fresh electrostatic cotton sheet evenly around the cylinder, smoothing it flat so it fully covers the surface with no overlap.
Step 4. Place the assembly back in the filter compartment, seating it firmly so it doesn’t wobble.
Step 5. Close the compartment – place both hands on the front panel and push it forward (away from your body) until you hear a ’click’ as the top closes fully.
Step 6. Plug back in and power on.

💡 Tip: Keep a pack of spare electrostatic cotton sheets on hand so you can swap as soon as the wrap looks loaded — fresh wrap = stronger airflow + longer composite filter life.
Signs Your Filter Needs Attention
You don’t have to stick to a strict calendar. Check your filter if you notice:
-
The purifier seems louder than usual
-
Airflow feels weaker
-
Dust or hair is visibly accumulating on the intake grille
-
The filter indicator light comes on (if your model has one)
Why It Matters
A clean pre-filter doesn’t just improve performance—it also protects your expensive HEPA filter. When the pre-filter does its job, the HEPA filter can last its full lifespan, saving you money in the long run.
